Project 1: Channel Island Barn Renovation in Guernsey

Nestled in the heart of Guernsey’s scenic Talbot Valley, this project showcases the striking transformation of a long-neglected barn into a bright, inviting home. The renovation was led by the property’s owner, Peter Falla, an architect and director at PF+A Architects, who brings over 30 years of experience designing exceptional residential properties across the Channel Islands.

Project Overview

  • Type: Building Renovation
  • Architect: PF+A Architects
  • Award/recognition: Guernsey Property & Construction Award - Best Single Residential Project in 2025

Design Highlights

  • Mumford & Wood designed and manufactured 11 Doors and 10 Casement Windows, all crafted from sustainably sourced timber—a choice that aligned seamlessly with Peter’s commitment to sustainability.
  • Several of the doors incorporate traditional tongue-and-groove panelling, while the standout front elevation showcases expansive windows measuring 2.6m wide by 2.2m high, complete with refined 22mm ovolo glazing bars.
  • Every element was finished with polished chrome ironmongery and painted externally in Juniper Ash 115 (Little Greene), with the interiors colour-matched to Linen Wash 33 (Little Greene), creating a timeless, cohesive aesthetic throughout.

Outcome

The completed barn is a true testament to craftsmanship, collaboration, and meticulous attention to detail - an effortless blend of old and new. Its generous glazed openings fill the interior with natural light while delivering outstanding energy performance, proving that heritage character and modern standards can coexist beautifully.

Peter says: “For me, it’s about how they perform in Guernsey’s climate and their input towards technical design. I don’t think I’ve come across any windows in my lifetime as an architect of equal quality.”

Project 2: London Arts Venue Project

Widely known as the ‘Fireworks Factory,’ the building has a rich and varied history. Originally a Tudor dockyard, it became central to Britain’s war efforts from the mid-17th century, housing the Royal Artillery and factories producing gun carriages, cannons, and munitions. Recently transformed into a vibrant arts venue, it now features a performance space, dance studios, artists’ workshops, cafés, and flexible rental spaces.

Project Overview

  • Type: Heritage Restoration
  • Contractor: Mace Contractors
  • Award/recognition: RIBA London’s Conservation Award

Design Highlights

  • Mumford & Wood were commissioned to design and manufacture 11 Timber Windows, comprising 7 from our Classic range and 4 from our Heritage range.
  • To preserve the historic character of the building, we used traditional putty glazing for an authentic finish. Box sashes were custom-made for structural openings that had either been modified or reopened after being blocked up for many years.
  • Section sizes were carefully adjusted on elevation to align seamlessly with adjacent windows that had already been renovated, ensuring a cohesive and harmonious appearance.

Outcome

The project successfully restored the building’s character while respecting its heritage. Each window was carefully crafted to preserve the original aesthetic, using traditional materials and techniques to maintain authenticity. The result is a seamless integration of new timber windows that honour the building’s history, demonstrating a sensitive and thoughtful approach to conservation.
