Traditionally Styled New Build Transformation with Mumford & Wood
Nestled in a quiet Essex village, the Hedley family’s new home is a striking example of how traditional style and modern performance can be seamlessly combined.

We are really happy with the windows, doors and bi-folds from Mumford & Wood. The look is exactly what we hoped for, and the colour finish works really well with the scheme of the house.

Project Overview
Initially intending to renovate the original post-war house on the site, the Hedleys soon discovered that bringing the ageing property up to modern standards would be cost-prohibitive.
“After consulting with our architect, it became clear that a complete rebuild would be more practical,” Mrs Hedley explains. “My vision was to create a new house that felt authentically old.”
Taking a hands-on approach to the entire project, Mrs Hedley personally designed every detail of the home’s layout, finish, and façade. But with a larger footprint than the original house, the new build faced planning restrictions, including limitations on using all-brick finishes for the exterior.
When it came to windows and doors, the Hedleys were introduced to Mumford & Wood through their builder, Derek Mason. Although Mr Hedley works in the window industry, primarily with non-timber products, the couple was impressed by the craftsmanship and style of the timber samples Derek shared.
“Once we saw the sample, we were convinced timber was the right choice. The decision was made that same day, we didn’t even explore alternatives,” Mrs Hedley says.
Sash Windows
For a property designed to echo period architecture, timber Sash windows were the natural choice. Supplied in a sophisticated dual-colour finish, ‘Pebble Grey’ externally and ‘Signal White’ internally, the windows strike a perfect balance between heritage styling and modern performance.
Entrance Door
To create a bold first impression, the Hedleys selected a beautifully crafted Framlingham-style Entrance door, mirroring the window colour scheme. Traditional in form and highly secure in function, the door adds elegance and presence to the home’s exterior.
Bi-Fold Doors
To the rear of the property, three matching 4-panel timber Bi-fold door sets were installed, offering expansive views of the garden and creating a flexible, open connection between indoor and outdoor living spaces.
