Project Overview
"Previously, this site was a former searchlight base - it wasn't even built for residential use," she explains. "So, we had to demolish the original structure and start completely from scratch."
With a clear architectural vision from the outset, Mrs Whitehouse brought in an architect to assist with the designs but remained hands-on throughout the project to ensure the finished home aligned perfectly with her aspirations.
"Given the rural setting, I knew I wanted a home that looked traditional, something that would complement and enhance the natural surroundings."
During the early stages of the build, Mrs Whitehouse visited the National Self Build & Renovation Centre (NSBRC) in Swindon, where Mumford & Wood has a permanent display within the "Mumford & Wood House". "Our architect also recommended Mumford & Wood to me, so visiting the NSBRC was a vital part of the process," she says.
"This house was always going to have timber windows. I had hardwood windows in my previous home, so UPVC was never an option." Now that the work is complete, Mrs Whitehouse's vision has been realised. Her home exudes timeless character and charm, with Mumford & Wood's timber windows and doors providing the perfect architectural finishing touches.
"I've been so impressed with the service from Mumford & Wood. There was a minor issue during the survey, which was resolved immediately, and the aftercare has been exceptionally attentive."
Flush Casement Windows
To achieve the authentic, period-inspired look she wanted, Mrs Whitehouse selected Timber Flush Casement windows finished in classic ‘Signal White’. Featuring traditional square 18mm astragal glazing bars, these windows are manufactured from engineered European Redwood, chosen for its stability and resistance to warping or twisting over time.
Entrance Door
The entrance to the home is marked by a beautifully styled Bevington Timber Front Door, finished in elegant ‘Silk Grey’. It’s framed with a ‘Signal White’ surround and flag window and complemented by polished Chrome ironmongery. As with all Mumford & Wood doors, it combines timeless design with robust technology and premium performance for enduring quality.
French Doors
A key feature of the new garden room was the desire to maximise natural light and embrace the outdoor views. A stunning set of Timber French Doors, flanked by matching casement windows, fulfilled this brief perfectly. The result is a light, airy space that opens seamlessly onto the surrounding countryside, ideal for summer living and creating a strong connection between indoors and out.
