Sash Window Installation Complements Historic Home Refurbishment

Project Overview

With decades of charm to preserve, the goal of the project was to restore the home’s heritage features while bringing it up to modern standards, both in terms of style and performance.

Originally a coaching inn and in the same family for over 90 years, the property had fallen into disrepair. “It would have been easier and cheaper to knock it down and start again,” Mrs Pickup admits, “but we felt a strong responsibility to honour the home’s past and restore it properly.”

With no listed status to navigate, the 18-month renovation was able to proceed with greater flexibility, allowing the team to focus on high-quality materials and historically sensitive details. It was through her local Jewson branch in Letchworth that Mrs Pickup was first introduced to Mumford & Wood’s range of engineered timber windows and doors.

“We had a poor experience on a previous project with windows that came in kit form, difficult to install and not particularly special once in place. We didn’t want to repeat that. When I saw the Mumford & Wood range and how it had been used on other period homes, it gave me real confidence.”

The results speak for themselves. The carefully selected windows and doors enhance the home’s traditional appearance while offering excellent performance. “Our builders were delighted,” she adds. “Everything arrived fully finished, easy to install, and the quality is clear.”

Sash Windows

Classic Hidden Spring Sash windows were installed throughout, chosen in a crisp Pure White finish with vertical 18mm astragal glazing bars. The design offers the traditional look of a heritage property while incorporating discreet modern functionality.

French Doors

Matching timber French doors were selected to complement the sash windows, offering generous natural light and easy access to outdoor spaces. Finished in the same Pure White, these doors add both elegance and flexibility to the living spaces.
