Reputation for Quality Cemented by Successful Collaboration for Developments
Based in Winchester, Gary Thew of Character Building Developments has built a strong reputation across Hampshire for his expertise in transforming period properties and creating heritage-sensitive new builds.

I’m currently working on a new project in Winchester, and I’ll absolutely be looking to specify products from Mumford & Wood again. The quality is outstanding.

Project Overview
“Over the years, I’ve worked with a wide variety of timber window and door brands, including some of the biggest names in the industry,” Gary explains. “But I was increasingly dissatisfied with the standard of the products. I knew I needed a better-quality option.”
It was Gary’s trusted builder’s merchant, Elliotts, who introduced him to Mumford & Wood, recommending their timber range as ideally suited for the kind of architecturally sensitive projects Gary specialises in.
This particular development, located at Provost Place in Winchester, involved a carefully considered blend of renovation and new construction. Originally used for regimental administration, including jail cells and military vehicle bays, the site’s heritage was closely tied to the neighbouring church and barracks.
Working closely with the landowner (who had owned the site since the late 1990s), Gary and his team retained and restored original structures while adding new sympathetically styled homes arranged around a private courtyard.
“Mumford & Wood’s products aligned perfectly with our need for authenticity, performance and visual harmony. The timber sash windows and entrance doors provided exactly the right balance between heritage character and modern standards.”
Sash Windows
To respect the architectural heritage of the site, timber Sash windows were specified in a style and colour palette faithful to the original designs. The new windows not only preserve the period aesthetic but also offer improved thermal and acoustic performance, making them ideal for modern living within a historical context.
Entrance Doors
A standout feature of the homes at Provost Place is the selection of bespoke Entrance doors, including the beautifully crafted Lulworth door with sidelights and a toplight. Finished in a tone complementary to Farrow & Ball’s ‘Manor House Grey’, the door strikes a perfect balance between traditional styling and contemporary durability, echoing the elegance and stature of the original buildings.
