Kent Home Renovation Embraces Traditional Aesthetic
What began as a simple walk with their dogs nearly three decades ago led Mr and Mrs Handley to discover a piece of land that would become their forever home.

Mumford & Wood came highly recommended to us by a friend—the owner of a property development firm, who regularly uses their products. We’re really delighted with the windows and doors.

Project Overview
Nestled within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in Kent, the couple eventually gained planning permission after two years of careful negotiation and built their family home on the site.
Originally constructed in the 1980s, the home featured dark mahogany windows with decorative leaded glass, a typical feature of the period but now dated by modern standards. Years later, when Mr Handley promised his wife a new kitchen, it soon became clear that a full-scale renovation and extension would better suit the evolving style and function of the home.
“We realised the house needed a complete facelift,” explains Mr Handley. “We wanted to bring in more natural light, update the overall aesthetic, and create a better flow between the home and garden.”
As part of the extension, four sets of French doors were installed at the rear of the home, along with a set of oversized French doors in the master bedroom, which offer expansive views of the surrounding fields and open onto what will soon be a Juliet balcony.
The couple took inspiration from a friend’s property that featured French Grey windows, a look they loved. They opted for a consistent tone across all windows and doors, creating a unified, refined appearance that respects the natural setting.
Flush Casement Windows
The Handleys chose classic timber Flush Casement windows with elegant leaded light detailing, all finished in a popular ‘Pebble Grey’. The understated design complements the rural location while introducing a more modern, refined finish.
Entrance Door
For the front of the property, a timeless Bevington-style Entrance door was specified. Also finished in ‘Pebble Grey’, the door delivers a welcoming first impression and coordinates perfectly with the rest of the fenestration.
French Doors
To maximise light and access to the rear garden, multiple sets of French doors were installed as part of the new extension. These doors enhance the connection between indoor and outdoor living while providing easy access for both homeowners and their beloved dogs.
