Project Overview
After standing empty for several years, the Grade II-listed building has now been brought back to life and transformed into elegant apartments, while the former playground has been developed into three beautifully crafted homes.
Originally built in 1888, the main structure’s historic character has been carefully preserved and enhanced. Following full approval from the local planning authority, the school’s revival includes a mix of stylish flats and three new family homes, one detached and two semi-detached properties, designed to reflect the heritage of the site while delivering modern living.
Each of the three new homes features timber Sash windows from Mumford & Wood, including bay windows that give the two semi-detached homes their distinctive character. These traditionally styled windows help maintain the architectural continuity of the development while offering high-performance, modern comfort.
Homeowner Mr May shares his experience: “I viewed several properties in nearby towns, but the moment I saw this one, I was sold. We bought the house for the Sash windows, and they’re absolutely beautiful.”
It’s a sentiment echoed by fellow residents Mr and Mrs Pye, who now live in one of the homes: “The house is so light and airy. The glass in the new windows is incredibly clear, so much so that a couple of birds have flown into them!”
With all three properties now complete and fully occupied and the historic school building restored, NR Powell Developments has created a peaceful retreat in a highly desirable corner of the Essex countryside.
Sash Windows
The new homes feature elegant timber Sash windows finished in ‘Signal White’, chosen to complement the traditional architecture. Each window is designed with vertical 18mm astragal glazing bars and decorative sash horns to the upper sash, enhancing the heritage aesthetic while delivering modern energy efficiency.
French Doors
To the rear of each property, timber French doors, some paired with a single sidelight, offer effortless access to the garden and allow natural light to pour into the living spaces. All are finished to match the sash windows, creating a seamless and cohesive look throughout.
