Converted Agricultural Buildings With Mumford & Wood
On farmland in Ware, Hertfordshire, owned by Lord Carter, a former brick-built dairy and tractor shed has been thoughtfully converted into three contemporary-style living units.
I’m also managing a nearby project where the homeowner initially wanted to use a local joiner. I’ve since convinced them to switch to Mumford & Wood because their products are far superior.

Project Overview
Gordon Newbound, lead contractor and owner of K & G Newbound Building Contractors, is well-known locally for delivering high-quality developments and earning repeat business through trusted relationships. Gordon was introduced to Mumford & Wood via his local Jewsons branch, which connected him with the Mumford & Wood team.
“Mumford & Wood offered a great alternative to the joinery companies we’d used before,” Gordon explains. “The timber quality from other joiners simply didn’t match up. Their products often arrived unglazed and unfinished, needing extra work on-site. Yet the costs were about the same.”
Originally, all three units were planned within the old dairy building, but plans evolved to convert the detached tractor shed into a third, larger dwelling. This allowed for more spacious units overall, with added storage in the dairy section.
The development features a stylish combination of entrance doors, French doors, flush casement windows, and a large patio door, replacing the original Critall windows and bringing a contemporary, cohesive look.
“We’ve had zero issues with the windows and doors since installation. That’s a huge improvement compared to previous experiences where joiners often had to return for repairs,” says Gordon.
With two additional units currently being converted on the site, the initial three homes have already proven popular, all rented and fully occupied. Gordon has been so impressed with Mumford & Wood’s quality and service that he’s recommending them for other projects.
French Doors
Two of the units feature elegant French doors with sidelights and toplights, finished in sophisticated ‘Anthracite Grey’. These doors flood the interiors with natural light and add a refined contemporary style to the homes.
Patio Doors
For the detached third unit, a large set of Sliding Patio doors in the same finish was specified. With two dogs in the household, the ease of access these doors provide has been a particular highlight for the owners, enhancing the flow between indoor and outdoor living spaces.
