Barn Conversion in Suffolk Fuses Style with Substance
On a longstanding family farm in rural Suffolk, a traditional barn has been sensitively converted into a characterful living space.

Everyone from Mumford & Wood was fantastic. They supported us through every stage of the specifying and ordering process, making sure everything met the conservation authority’s requirements. Because the new windows and doors had to work with the original barn openings, we also needed special permission to use our chosen styles, and they helped us navigate it all.

Project Overview
The barn forms part of the farm where Mrs Gladwell has lived her entire life.
“We’d dreamed of converting the barn for years,” she explains. “But local conservation regulations are incredibly strict for projects like this. One of the first steps was proving that the barn had no existing commercial or community use.”
With conservation constraints in mind, the search for suitable windows and doors was thorough. “We handled much of the project ourselves while still working full time,” says Mrs Gladwell. “We spent much time researching, but we always knew we wanted timber. Anything else just wouldn’t have suited the building.”
A recommendation from her local Ridgeons builder merchant led Mrs Gladwell to Mumford & Wood. With guidance from the team, they worked together to meet all conservation authority stipulations and secure approvals.
“The support we received gave us real confidence, and once everything was signed off, we couldn’t wait to get started,” she says.
The finished result is a beautiful barn conversion, with timber windows and doors from Mumford & Wood that honour the building’s heritage while delivering the performance and finish of a modern home.
Bi-Fold Doors
To open up the main living area and bring in natural light, a striking four-panel Bi-fold door set was chosen in a dual colour finish, ‘Signal Black’ externally and ‘Straw’ internally. These doors have transformed the space, flooding the interior with daylight while complementing the barn’s original timber beams.
Entrance Door
For a welcoming and character-appropriate front entrance, Mrs Gladwell selected the timeless Pomeroy Entrance door, finished externally in a soft, heritage-inspired ‘Pale Green’. The door perfectly matches the scale and age of the property, adding charm and authenticity.
“With the barn now finished, we couldn’t be happier,” she concludes. “Mumford & Wood were there every step of the way, and we’re absolutely delighted with how the windows and doors look.”
