1900s Home Becomes Contemporary Haven
After purchasing their traditional two-up, two-down property over a decade ago, the Rooker family always had a clear vision to extend, modernise and create a home that embraced open-plan living while remaining sympathetic to the original structure.

Our developer, Sean Perry of Meadowbank Developments, highly recommended Mumford & Wood. He had worked with them on previous projects and knew their made-to-measure range would be the perfect fit. The combination of styles, the bespoke service, and the exceptional quality — we’re absolutely thrilled with the results.

Project Overview
Some early renovation work was completed, but the real transformation began more recently, with a full-scale redevelopment that turned the modest house into a spacious, contemporary five-bedroom family home.
The project included significant internal reconfiguration, the addition of extra bathrooms and living areas, external landscaping, and, critically, the specification of timber windows and doors by Mumford & Wood.
"We always knew the windows and doors would be a focal point of the redesign," explains Deborah Rooker. "They needed to offer style, substance and performance to complement the new build features while enhancing the traditional character of the original house."
Working closely with developer Sean Perry, who had previously collaborated with Mumford & Wood, the Rookers were introduced to the brand's full range of engineered timber sash windows, flush casements, bay windows, bi-folds and French doors - all crafted to exacting standards in sustainable Redwood timber and delivered ready to install.
The final result is a light-filled, open-plan home that flows seamlessly from old to new and from indoors to outdoors, thanks in large part to the choice of windows and doors.
"The house has been completely transformed," says Deborah. "The quality of the windows and doors, including the hardware, is outstanding. They arrived fully finished and fitted perfectly. The new bi-folds at the rear have completely changed how we use the space, and they've turned the garden into an extension of our home."
Sash Windows
Beautifully crafted timber Sash windows with a hidden spring mechanism were chosen for their elegant, traditional appearance and smooth operation. Finished in Pebble Grey, they feature 18mm vertical astragal glazing bars and decorative sash horns, perfectly balancing period style with modern performance.
Bi-Fold Doors
Replacing outdated patio doors, a new set of Bi-fold timber doors was installed at the rear of the property. Finished in the same Pebble Grey as the windows, the doors open fully to create a continuous flow between indoor living spaces and the landscaped garden.
Matt at Mumford & Wood notes a growing trend among homeowners like the Rookers:
"We're seeing increasing numbers of people choosing to renovate and extend rather than move. High-quality timber windows and doors offer the perfect blend of aesthetics and energy performance, and they complement both traditional homes and contemporary extensions beautifully."
For the Rookers, the project has delivered exactly what they hoped for: a stylish, functional and welcoming home built around craftsmanship and thoughtful design.
