When it comes to architectural projects, there’s little room for error. Every detail must be carefully considered, every specification must be aligned with regulations, and every design choice must be approved by clients who often have exacting standards. For architects, the fear of planning rejection, project delays, or client disappointment is ever-present. That’s why so many leading practices place their trust in Mumford & Wood, a timber window and door specialist with a proven track record of delivering reliable supply and client-approved results.
Rather than simply supplying products, Mumford & Wood partners with architects to eliminate friction, mitigate risk, and protect reputations. Here’s how our expertise has made a difference on some of the UK’s most high-profile projects.
Wardour Street, London – Meeting Conservation and Aesthetic Demands
The Challenge
Situated in the heart of Soho’s Conservation Area, the Wardour Street project demanded a delicate balance between strict planning requirements, authentic period detailing, and modern performance. Adding complexity, the specification called for multiple opening sections to integrate with the building’s fire system. This required smoke actuators and automatic mechanisms capable of providing ventilation in the event of a fire, which was a first for Mumford & Wood.
The challenge lay in incorporating the wiring and electronics during manufacture while preserving the intricate detailing demanded by conservation officers.

Our Solution
Mumford & Wood collaborated closely with the project team to design and manufacture Fixed Casement windows that not only respected but enhanced the building’s historic façade. The specification required windows with restricted openings and the faithful replication of intricate period details, including distinctive transom and mullion mouldings that were essential to maintaining the architectural character of this central London setting.
In total, 83 bespoke windows were designed and produced, each seamlessly housing the electronic system without compromising the historic aesthetic and meeting fire regulations.
By combining traditional craftsmanship with advanced manufacturing techniques, we were able to deliver products that offered both authenticity and modern performance. Each unit was factory-finished, double-glazed, and built to meet the rigorous standards of the British Woodworking Federation’s Timber Window Accreditation Scheme.
The Result
The new windows sailed through conservation scrutiny, and the client was delighted with the authenticity of the finished project.

Regent Arcade, Cheltenham – Reliability in a Complex Commercial Renovation
The Challenge
As one of Cheltenham’s most recognisable retail landmarks, Regent Arcade demanded a sensitive renovation that balanced heritage preservation with modern performance standards. The project required bespoke timber Sash Windows that could meet strict conservation criteria while supporting a seamless project timeline. To achieve this, Chapman Taylor LLP Architects in London specified high-performance timber sash windows from Mumford & Wood’s Conservation collection.

Our Solution
Mumford & Wood supplied bespoke Sash Windows that successfully retained the arcade’s period character while delivering the performance levels expected in a modern commercial environment. These award-winning windows not only met the stringent requirements of local planners but also achieved a BSI A+ energy rating, ensuring optimal thermal comfort for both customers and staff within the open-plan store layout.
Exceeding the U-value requirements of the revised Part L Building Regulations (2013), the Conservation range provides exceptional energy efficiency without compromising on authenticity. Each product carries the BSI Kitemark and is Energy Saving Trust (EST) recommended, offering architects complete confidence in both compliance and long-term performance.
The Result
The refurbishment progressed without a hitch. With no supply-related setbacks, Mumford & Wood helped deliver a high-quality restoration that impressed both conservation officers and the client.

Turnberry Resort – Prestige Meets Performance
The Challenge
Renovating the globally recognised Turnberry Resort in Scotland was a project with no margin for error. The architects faced immense pressure: not only did the new timber windows and doors need to preserve the resort’s historic elegance, but they also had to achieve modern performance standards for energy and acoustic insulation. With such a prestigious project, the cost of disappointment would have been immense.

Our Solution
Mumford & Wood collaborated closely with the project team to design and supply timber Sash Windows, Casements, and doors that complemented the resort’s historic character while meeting modern performance standards. By blending traditional craftsmanship with advanced engineering, we achieved a seamless balance of aesthetic authenticity and functionality.
The specification included a diverse range of Conservation products, such as top-hung casements in double and triple-height configurations, large fixed Sashes (including curved plan designs), decorative curved-header Sliding Sashes, Single and double French doors, and bespoke bullseye-shaped windows, all tailored to preserve the resort’s distinctive architectural style.
The Result
The refurbishment reinforced the resort’s reputation for luxury and elegance, with Mumford & Wood delivering a flawless solution that exceeded client expectations.
