Don’t be put off by the thought of regular repainting. Timber Window paint and stains, when applied properly, can last between 5 and 10 years. With the right care and general maintenance, that’s a very achievable time frame.
Our paints and stains come with guarantees of up to 10 years and 6 years, respectively, and our workmanship warranty also lasts for 10 years, so if your Mumford & Wood window frames are painted, you're covered for at least a decade.
Of course, several external factors can influence how your paint ages. These include:
- Proximity to the coast (salty air can wear down coatings faster)
- Exposure to frequent rain, high winds, or harsh sun
- Airborne debris, such as tree sap or pollution
We recommend checking your window paint during your regular window cleaning routine as it’s usually easy to see when a refresh might be needed.
Can I Repaint My Timber Windows?
Absolutely. Repainting your timber Window frames is a straightforward process. At Mumford & Wood, we use a water-based, microporous hand-spray-applied paint system. This prevents flaking and ensures that repainting over the original coat is both simple and effective.
Also attached to every order is a small bottle of paint for small touch-ups should you require it.
How to Repaint Your Timber Windows
Repainting is usually only needed if you want to change the colour or if your current coat is fading or stained (especially with darker shades or areas prone to tree sap).
Here’s a step-by-step guide to repainting:
- Lightly sand the surface using a fine-grade abrasive paper (P240 is ideal). You don’t need to sand down to bare wood — doing so may compromise the paint system underneath.
- Wipe the frame with a clean, damp cloth to remove any dust. Allow it to dry fully.
- Use a water-based, microporous paint to ensure the timber remains breathable.
- We recommend applying the paint with a long-haired synthetic brush, making sure the brush is thoroughly dampened with water before use to help achieve a smooth finish.
