Struggling to choose between bi-fold, patio, or French doors? Let us help make that decision a little easier.

Bi-fold, patio, and French doors all have their unique strengths. At Mumford & Wood, we understand that whether you’re developing your current property or building your dream property from the ground up, the details matter. Your doors should not only suit your space and lifestyle but also enhance the value, appearance, and comfort of your home.

Let’s break down the differences between these three popular timber door options to help guide your decision.

What Is a Bi-Fold Door?

Bi-fold doors are composed of multiple panels that fold in on themselves, similar to a concertina. They open and close with smooth ease and typically run on a bottom-rolling track for added stability. At Mumford & Wood, we offer three bifold gearing options: bottom-running, top-hung, and 50/50 split — each with distinct benefits depending on your space and structural requirements.

Benefits of Bi-Fold Doors:

  • Excellent insulation and energy-saving performance
  • Large glass panels that let in natural light
  • Seamless connection between indoor and outdoor living areas
  • Customisable from 3 to 8 glass panels
  • Quiet and fluid operation via a precision tracking system

Our timber bi-fold doors are available in both modern and traditional styles, with optional glazing bars and panel detailing to suit period properties or contemporary schemes. They also come with multi-point locking mechanisms and security glazing as standard for your peace of mind.

Choose Bi-Fold Doors If:

  • You have a large opening or open-plan space
  • You want to maximise sunlight and outdoor connectivity
  • You need flexibility and smooth operation
  • You're creating a feature between a kitchen/living space and a garden

What Is a Patio Door?

Also known as sliding glass doors, timber patio doors are a brilliant way to invite more natural light into your property. Like bi-folds, they run on a track system and are ideal for creating open-plan transitions from inside to out. They're also often more budget-friendly than structural extensions.

Our patio doors can be designed with up to 6 sliding panels and can span up to 8 metres in width.

Choose Patio Doors If:

  • You have a medium-sized opening
  • You want a sleek, modern look with minimal intrusion
  • You’re looking for a cost-effective way to add space and light
  • You prefer uninterrupted glass panels for views

What Is a French Door?

French doors have a timeless elegance, originating in France during the 16th century. They typically feature two outward-opening sashes, though inward-opening options are also available. Their classic symmetry and charm make them ideal for traditional homes and smaller spaces.

Unlike patio doors that slide, French doors open on hinges and can make a charming focal point in any room.

Choose French Doors If:

  • You have a smaller home, but want to create the illusion of space
  • You’re looking to add character to a period or cottage-style home
  • You prefer a more classic, symmetrical look
  • You want easy garden access with traditional appeal

Still Can’t Decide? Ask Yourself…

  • How often will I use these doors?
  • Will I use them all year round or mainly in summer?
  • How secure are they?
  • How easy are they to clean and maintain?
  • What is my budget?
  • Will they suit the architectural style of my home?
