19th Century Cottage in Cambridgeshire Restored with Period Detailing
Originally built in the 1840s, this picturesque Cambridgeshire cottage has undergone a stunning transformation led by homeowner Ms Locke.

“I wouldn’t hesitate to use Mumford & Wood again, either on my own house or a future project.”
The Project
Originally built in the 1840s, this picturesque Cambridgeshire cottage has undergone a stunning transformation led by homeowner Ms Locke.
The renovation was a true labour of love, brought to life with the help of local developer Paul Duncan, a long-standing customer of Mumford & Wood, who carried out the full programme of internal and external works.
“The previous owner had been a tenant here for 60 years. When the opportunity came up to buy the house from the landlord, I jumped at the chance and got started right away.”
The property was stripped back to its original walls and floors, and a dated lean-to at the rear was replaced with a beautiful, light-filled extension, part of a vision carefully executed by Mr Duncan.
“It was Paul who introduced us to Mumford & Wood, and he couldn’t have recommended them more highly.”
Every detail of the new windows and doors was chosen with local character and heritage in mind. “We’re part of the Tickell Estate here, and when I was designing the new front door, I knew I wanted gothic bars to reflect the style of the estate and the neighbouring homes.”
“The new windows and doors from Mumford & Wood have exceeded expectations. We’re absolutely delighted.”

Entrance Door
The striking front door is a gothic-inspired variation of the classic ‘Hadleigh’ design, finished in a tone similar to Farrow & Ball’s ‘Bone’. It features 27mm gothic bars and black door hardware, creating a statement entrance that honours the property’s heritage and rural charm.

Sash Windows
Slim timber Sash windows were installed throughout the cottage and painted to match the entrance door for a cohesive finish. The style perfectly complements the architecture and period of the home, bringing elegance and authenticity.
Flush Casement Windows
In the bathroom and on the landing, two smaller Flush Casement windows were custom-designed by Ms Locke. Gothic bars echo the design of the front door, preserving the home’s character and connection to the surrounding estate.

French Doors
To complete the newly built rear extension, two sets of timber French doors were installed. Finished with gothic bars, they deliver a timeless and graceful aesthetic that respects the cottage’s history while enhancing the home’s liveability for years to come.
